Ana Maria “Loli” Ponce was born in San Luis in 1952. She was involved in the Peronist Youth and in Montoneros. She was kidnapped on July 18, 1977, at the Zoo and was seen at the ESMA until 1978. During her captivity, she wrote a series of poems that the survivor Graciela Daleo managed to take out of the clandestine center. These are the only writings of hers that have been preserved.
Poems by Ana Maria “Loli” Ponce
Translated by Carlota Roby

I search for the light
I search for the light,
still trapped between walls,
I search for the sun,
life,
birds,
laughter.
And I laugh,
I laugh
to be able to live,
to want to live;
and I want to find your eyes,
but everything has passed.
Only a shadow remains
and an empty place,
only the hours keep repeating
in my brain,
only some memories remain,
some caresses,
and a few words.
Even so,
I keep searching for life.
For Tomorrow
Tomorrow,
when we are no longer here
when everything has
turned dark,
when we no longer have
time to waste,
nor dreams to
pluck between kisses,
when my hands
separate from
yours,
and we have to clench
our fists in resignation;
when the mouth
has no more words
and the words disappear
in a dizzying whirl,
when the body
stops feeling
the constant company
of fear,
when the ears
get accustomed forever
to silence;
when
we are definitively gone,
tomorrow,
we, who were,
alive,
those who laughed and cried
and were nourished
by love,
wanting life,
we will be
returning;
and the skin will be
a dark mixture
of earth and stones,
and the eyes will be
a vast sky,
and the arms and bodies
will join unknowingly
and this child we wanted
will be there
loving us from afar,
holding our
eternal scream
opening our
warm belly
making the clenched
fists of pain
endless and multiplied.
Let them not lie to me
Let them not lie to me,
behind me,
the end awaits.
Let them not lie to me,
behind me,
are the memories,
the simple joy of living free.
Behind me,
there is a world that no longer belongs to me...
I look at my feet.
They are tied.
I look at my hands,
they are tied,
I look at my body;
it is kept between walls,
I look at my soul,
it is trapped...
I look at myself, simply
I look at myself and sometimes
I do not recognize myself...
Then I look at myself again,
the feet,
and they are tied;
the hands,
and they are tied;
the body,
and it is imprisoned;
but the soul,
oh! the soul cannot
remain like this,
I let it go, run,
to seek what still
remains of myself,
to make a world with scraps,
and then I laugh,
because I can still
feel alive.
